Start of Something New.

Hello Wednesday & No Ceilings Family,

Congrats to us all for making it to mid-week. This past M-W, I was in Vermont at Killington Mountain. As I type the name of the mountain, it sounds terrifying, but luckily I was in three days of ski lessons and mainly spent my time on the bunny hill. lol The views and scenery were great and I felt safe for the most part. lol During my lessons, at random times I would stop and ask myself, when was the last time I had to learn something net new as an adult. And not just something I could try once and it immediatly clicked (although some do), but something where I had to apply patience, brain power, physical demand? It’s been awhile for me. I’ve gotten comfortable in my knowledge in career planning & program management. But these last few days tested me and gave me a reminder that you constantly need to push yourself and be in those uncomfortable moments to grow. I also realized there were additional steps I could have taken to prepare my ski lessons. I in no way think this would have allowed me to have immediate success, but a huge part of skiing is the mental aspect. I do think my nerves would have been more calm.

Since I know myself and you all are always looking for the next challenge and/or area to grow in, below are some tips I think we can all apply. But, if you are looking to just wing it, that’s fine too. My Type A personality doesn’t work as well for that approach, but I’m confident you will excel.

  1. There’s this video platform called YouTube - I’m not sure if you heard of it, but there’s an instructional video for everything. Let’s try watching some videos.

  2. Google “whatever the topic is” and click on News - This will allow you to see any current stories or updates

  3. Reach out to friends - Although friends may not know the exact correct techniques, they may be able to tell you some tips or best practices.

In addition to my ideas above, I found this great article titled, “How to Overcome the Challenges of Learning Something New as an Adult”. All of the ideas mentioned, I resonated with. Check out my key take-aways below.

  1. The Obsession With Overnight Success - Patience is not my strong suit, but I love how skiing has helped me lean in on this.

  2. Fragmented Attention - “Success at any skill requires a certain level of focused attention of time and energy”. - My OOO is on, but my mind did tend to wonder on how my inbox is looking.

  3. Feeling Too Old To Start Something New - Each day, I see these amazing kids thriving in the snow and it’s easy to think, it’s too late. I am shifting my mindset to, that will be me soon. Enjoy the process, Alexandria.

As we wrap, I hope each of you step out of your comfort zone & try something new!

Have a great rest of your week!

-Alexandria
